Power To The People - Focus On The Sponsor

Written by: WeMustBeBolder

The latest show of sectarianism in Scotland by Celtic FC was as usual deconstructed by the club in the usual manner. It was the typical response to saying a lot in words but very little in the way of actions.

Celtic at the moment do seem to have an untouchable confidence. From Lawwell spouting quite frankly comical aspirations of Celtic becoming the biggest football club on the planet to their footballer Anthony Stokes claiming he has never heard such vile abuse as was directed at him during the game at Hearts recently.

These stories and many like them are instantly reported on by the mainstream and given the widest circulation. Up steps Ann Budge the owner of Hearts to give another side of the story. It was very clear that Ms Budge has given both barrels to Celtic FC about the content and behaviour of their 'fans' who recently attended a game at Tynecastle. She also, rightly banned a Hearts supporter.

It got me thinking that fans and concerned individuals who have no interest in football or sport can genuinely affect change in the modern game when a club gets too big for its boots or has seemingly become arrogantly immune to all that goes on around them, or so they think.

Here's a list of sponsors associated with Celtic FC.

http://www.celticfc.net/sponsors

It's quite a list and there are some very big brands like Nike and Coca Cola for example. We no longer need to be exposed to the hubris which oozes from Celtic park. The cup tie clash in Edinburgh should be the catalyst for deep rooted change at Celtic FC. We can directly influence proceedings from here on if we bypass the club and concentrate directly on their sponsors. Have a look at these high profile and recent cases relating to the power of sponsorship and the harm done when it is withdrawn.

Granted the clubs involved have all lost sponsorship due to an individual at a club being negatively associated with the brand. However the swell of attention is usually started by the public directly contacting the club, but the landscape has changed. People are beginning to bypass the club and direct their anger with the huge companies associated with such odious behaviour.

The public have now highlighted that being linked with a football club which endorses overt political behaviour, comments of a racist or homophobic nature or signs of support for a terrorist organisation can be very damaging for a sponsorship deal and the company itself. That list ticks every box for Celtic FC. Death/guilt/endorsement by association is something every big company and small for that matter want to avoid.

We have a duty not to stand by and watch as the power play of Celtic FC continues unchallenged. The media won't report the facts accurately. That's what happens when Celtic FC have a commercial deal with one of the biggest circulating newspapers in the west of Scotland. The SFA won't take the appropriate action. That's what happens when Celtic FC have an unhealthy and over bearing influence at the head of the Scottish game. The SPFL won't concern itself with Celtic's behaviour. That's what happens when Peter Lawwell and Neil Doncaster are spotted in an airport just about to fly off together to do a TV deal with SKY.

Lastly, have a look at the bank of Celtic FC.

http://www.co-operativebank.co.uk/aboutus/ourbusiness/ethicalpolicy

I chose this link intentionally because it directs you specifically to its ethical policy. I urge you to have a read. It laughable. They state, "Our unique Ethical Policy covers five key areas: Human Rights; International Development; Ecological Impact; Animal Welfare; and Social Enterprise. In line with our customers’ ethical concerns, we restrict finance to certain business sectors or activities, while at the same time committing to provide finance to those organisations making a positive community, social and environmental impact."

Wow, that's quite a credo! It's even more defining when you think back to the actions of Celtic FC which range from the support for terrorism within its ground and support, to loutish vandals who run amok at away grounds to the cover up of child abuse for decades. How can the CO-OP even begin to support this so called football club? I suggested we can make change happen with directing concerns not with the club itself or the authorities listed above for the reasons I have given but circumvent the insidious influence that Celtic FC have on our game and contact the companies associated with them.

That goes for the SFA and, oh I forgot the SPFL doesn't have a sponsor. When it does then we can address that until then, Celtic, it's no longer you we're interested in, it's your sponsors.
