It is becoming ever more predictable that each time Celtic fail to beat Rangers, that the Celtic Support will need a scapegoat to blame, and will find solace in a willing mhedia willing to round on said victim. This week it’s the turn of Kyle Lafferty (again). The quandary that Celtic fans have found themselves in this week is somewhat intriguing. With it an open secret (What is it about Celtic, and open secrets?) in Scotland that Conroy favours the green’n’grey, most of the celtic mhedia pack have found it difficult to strike a balance between their normal questioning the religion or integrity of the official when he’s “got it wrong” while still having someone to blame. Instead the concensus has been that Conroy was just wrong in disallowing both Marco Fortune’s goal, and yellow carding Kyle Lafferty. As they’ve had to stop short at questioning Conroy any further, the target for their vitriol this week has been Lafferty. Interestingly, the much maligned Pat Nevin on BBC’s Sportscene was about the only objective voice on the subject, with the sight of Richard Gordon, the alleged Aberdeen supporter, arguing with Nevin being just a tad embarrassing, after the close up replay showed Fortune to knock Alan McGregor’s arm away from the ball. Even more interesting is the continued bleating from some quarters that the goal should have stood, from commentators who must have seen the footage, but still cannot accept the outcome. While supporters understand that a match report done at the ground in real time may get some elements of the coverage wrong, one has to question why a “journo” could get it so hopelessly wrong days after the incident. Do the Green tinted spectacles have magical powers that change the course of a match? We should be told. Perhaps it’s those magic spectacles that return crowd figures from Parkhead to Seville tens of thousands above the reality? The other contentious decision of the match was Kyle Lafferty’s rash challenge on Andreas Hinkel. Personal opinion? A poor challenge, but the media’s representation of it has been, as predicted by some earlier in the week, extreme. Let’s be perfectly honest here, in this fixture, there have been a number of outrageous “tackles” from Celtic Players on Rangers players in the last few seasons alone, where the media pack have been notably quiet. There have also been various disgusting challenges by Celtic players on other opposing players which have all but been ignored. Some examples (There are many more on Youtube and elsewhere): Alan Thompson on Nacho Novo 2005: http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c183/Caledonia_1971/47b8dd28b3127cceb656db42b52d0000002.jpg Paul Lambert on Jorg Albertz: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFimrKcF9dQ
McManus again, on Andy Driver:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJ5QuYlHrSU Caldwell on Mendes: http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c183/Caledonia_1971/1442tz7.gif?t=1262802349 Caldwell on David Fernandez (1 Min in)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Su02eURNHuY Vennegoor of Hesselink on Faye: http://i26.tinypic.com/2i74i7o.jpg Barry Robson on Christian Dailly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygpoOJShLrk Scott McDonald (various): http://i37.tinypic.com/2dqlykh.gif http://i46.tinypic.com/2z7oooz.jpg http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11781_4407847,00.html Lennon stamp (1:42): Some of these “tackles” were downright malicious in intent, and one has to wonder why the mhedia have not, or did not display the same level of outrage as is currently being aimed at Lafferty? I await the anger and outrage from McGuire/Martin, Davie Hay, Charlie Nicholas, Murdo McLeod, Ronnie Cully, Daryl Broadfoot, Tom English, Hugh McDonald, Thomas Jordan, and Davie Provan the next time McDonald, Caldwell, McManus, Robson or Loovens attempt (or succeed) to end a player’s career. I’ll not hold my breath. Opportunity Knox.
