Those ‘Greatest Fans In The World’© (Again)

Well here we are more than half way through another season, but with the World Cup due in June/July it will be as short a time as possible without football this year.

Once again it is time to compare the ‘us’ v ‘them’ away support, with the exception of Hamilton whom they have already played twice at New Douglas Park. Celtic’s re arranged game at Rugby Park saw the completion of fixtures where both teams have visited all away grounds at least once. All figures from The Sun / News of the World.

At Pittodrie The Rangers attendance of 16,153 was surprisingly eclipsed by a figure of 650, at Tannadice the replayed game against Dundee United attracted 10,037 compared with the 11,098 who witnessed Celtic’s 2-1 defeat. It should be noted however that the attendance at the abandoned game was in the region of 12,500.

At Falkirk 108 more supporters turned out for the Visit of The Champions compared to the 6,795 who watched a spirited Falkirk draw 3-3 with Celtic.

Moving on to Hamilton where a new record crowd of 5,343 watched Rangers record a 1-0 win courtesy of Nacho Novo in an instantly forgettable match. Celtic have now played at New Douglas Park twice, their first game attracting 4,689 and 4,922 attending their second.

Much tighter at Tynecastle where 16,284 watched 10 man Rangers come back from a goal down. Just 64 less watched Celtic crash to defeat at the same venue.

Over at Easter Road a magnificent Christmas turnout of 16,894 watched Rangers turn on the style in a 4-1 thrashing, whilst 2,673 less watched Celtic win after McGeady saw red for simulation.
At Rugby Park despite all the hullabaloo surrounding the debut of Robbie Keane 1,002 more supporters turned out for the visit of The Rangers in a crowd of 10,310.

At Motherwell 9,355 attended the visit of Rangers, whilst 7,807 decided that it was Motherwell v Celtic they wanted to see.

At Perth again the margin was tight with the difference being 64 more supporters paying to see Rangers in a crowd of 7,807 compared to the 7,743 who turned up to watch a 4-1 Celtic victory.

At New Love Street 904 more souls turned up to watch Celtic than the midweek crowd of 5,260 who watched a 2-0 Rangers victory which was also live on TV.

So in 7 out of the 10 games to compare Rangers attracted the larger attendance.

Those are the facts people – do NOT let Celtic fans continue with this myth that they are the greatest fans yadda yadda yadda. But then again when did Celtic Football Club ever let facts get in the way of a good lie?
